Hazing Policy East High School has always encouraged its teams and organizations to participate in positive activities. Duluth East has an energetic and creative student body. The School District and East High School are very proud of the many accomplishments of our student athletic teams and organizations. It is recognized that student involvement in athletics and extra-curricular activities is an important and integral part of high school.Duluth East also recognizes the outstanding efforts of its coaches and advisors in working with the East students. Their dedication and hard work is greatly appreciated. It is important for all coaches and advisors to make students aware of the “Hazing” Policy of ISD #709. School organizations and teams cannot engage in any activity that would embarrass or humiliate a student. This policy includes any team/group selections or initiations. Coaches/advisors should make certain that any group/team does not engage in the following: a. Initiation rites that includes face-painting or unusual costumes. b. Unauthorized public performances (i.e. performing the school song, cheer or dance routines). c. Any physical activities (i.e. paddling, blindfolds, obstacle courses). d. Any public activities that would embarrass or single out a member (i.e. singing or dancing at a restaurant, standing on street corners waving at cars, or making purchases which may embarrass the individual). e. Any activities that involves putting up signs or toilet paper on any buildings or homes. This is a very dangerous activity that has resulted in violent altercations with neighbors. f. Any activities that separate team members and treat them in an embarrassing way. This includes traveling to and from events. Duluth East will not allow upperclassmen to harass or humiliate underclass team/organization members in any way. What organizations or teams may do is: a. Have a party after the selection process. b. Wear nice clothes to school the next day – perhaps with a corsage or button. c. Post a “congratulations” sign in the hall with the names of the new group.
